Fortis Greater Noida treats four patients with complex spine disorders ahead of World Spine Day

On World Spine Day, Fortis Hospital Greater Noida highlighted four complex spine cases demonstrating the role of timely diagnosis, specialised surgical techniques, and multidisciplinary care in improving mobility and quality of life.

The patients, aged 16 to 44, were treated for conditions ranging from severe spinal deformities, including scoliosis, to debilitating nerve compression. Led by Dr. Himanshu Tyagi, director, department of Orthopaedics, along with Dr. Rajesh Subhash Mishra, consultant, Orthopaedics, and Dr. Kapil Khare, consultant, orthopaedics, Fortis Hospital Greater Noida and the hospital’s multidisciplinary team, the cases highlight the growing range of treatment options available for complex spinal conditions.

The first two cases involved Siddharth Singh, a 20-year-old from Kushinagar, and Ms. Radhika Chandela, a 16-year-old from Noida, both of whom had scoliosis-a condition in which the spine curves sideways, often forming a C-shaped or S-shaped curve when viewed from behind. Siddharth had a severe 72-degree spinal curvature, while Radhika had a visible and painful dorsolumbar deformity, affecting the junction between the middle and lower back.

Following comprehensive assessments and multidisciplinary clearance, both patients underwent scoliosis correction surgery under general anaesthesia. The procedures involved specialised rods and screws to improve spinal alignment, stabilize the spine and prevent further progression of the curvature. Post-operative care included blood transfusions, support with a Taylor’s brace and guided rehabilitation. Both patients were able to walk following surgery and continued to make progress in their recovery.

The third case involved Jatin Tyagi, a 44-year-old from Delhi, who had a prolapsed disc in his neck that was compressing nerve roots, causing severe pain radiating down his left arm and associated numbness. Following initial stabilization and ICU monitoring, he underwent Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF). Performed through an incision at the front of the neck, the procedure involves removing the affected disc to relieve nerve compression and using a cage, plate, screws, and bone graft to support spinal fusion and stability. Following surgery, he experienced prompt relief from arm pain and resolution of numbness and was able to stand and walk the next day.

The fourth case involved Gautam, a 30-year-old from Agra, who experienced severe lower back pain radiating down his left leg, accompanied by tingling and numbness. His symptoms limited his ability to walk for more than five minutes. Doctors performed an endoscopic discectomy, a minimally invasive procedure using a small incision and a high-definition endoscope to visualise and remove the herniated disc material pressing on the nerve, while minimizing disruption to surrounding tissues. Following the procedure, his symptoms improved, and he was able to walk before being discharged a few days later.

Dr. Himanshu Tyagi said, “Spinal disorders can significantly affect mobility, independence and quality of life, whether in a young person with scoliosis or an adult experiencing debilitating nerve compression. Advances in corrective surgery and minimally invasive techniques allow us to tailor treatment to each patient’s condition and needs. Alongside appropriate surgical intervention, individualised follow-up and guided rehabilitation are essential to recovery. World Spine Day is an opportunity to emphasise timely diagnosis and specialist care to help patients regain mobility and return to daily activities.”

Bindu Sharma, facility director, Fortis Hospital Greater Noida, said, “The progress of these four patients reflects the coordinated efforts of our surgical, nursing and rehabilitation teams, supported by specialists across emergency medicine, intensive care, cardiology, pulmonology, paediatrics and internal medicine, according to individual clinical needs. From assessment and preparation for surgery to post-operative care, this collaborative approach supports continuity of care. We remain committed to providing specialised spine care and supporting patients and their families throughout recovery.”
